The Federal Government has fulfilled its promise to reward Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their historic victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.

The African champions were officially presented with documents for their allocated houses as well as certificates of national honours during a ceremony held in Lyon, France, where the team is currently participating in the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

The presentation was carried out by officials of the National Sports Commission, including Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade, marking the formal fulfilment of a pledge made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu after the team’s triumph.

D’Tigress had secured the AfroBasket title in 2025 after defeating Mali in the final, extending their dominance as the most successful team in African women’s basketball.

As part of the reward package announced in August 2025, each player was promised a national honour Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), a cash reward of $100,000, and a housing allocation in Abuja, while members of the technical crew were to receive $50,000 each.

Team captain Amy Okonkwo expressed gratitude to the government and Nigerians for the recognition, describing the gesture as a strong motivation for the team ahead of future competitions, including the upcoming World Cup.

Officials say the move demonstrates the government’s renewed commitment to rewarding excellence in sports and boosting athlete welfare, while also inspiring young Nigerians to pursue success on the global stage.

The ceremony marks a significant moment for Nigerian sports, as D’Tigress continue to build their legacy as continental champions and global contenders.
