Aba Tragedy: Billboard Crushes Tricycles, Injures Many
Shocking Incident in Abia State Leaves Residents in Mourning
A tragic incident struck the commercial city of Aba in Abia State, Nigeria, on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, when a massive billboard collapsed during a heavy downpour. The billboard came crashing down at the Salad Market junction, near the GIA Event Centre along the busy Aba-Owerri Road, crushing several commercial tricycles (commonly known as keke) and leaving multiple passengers severely injured.
How the Aba Billboard Tragedy Unfolded
Eyewitnesses reported that strong winds accompanied by torrential rain uprooted the billboard, sending it tumbling onto the crowded road. Multiple tricycles were trapped beneath the structure, sparking panic among drivers, passengers, and passersby.
“It was terrifying,” said Mrs. Blessing, a trader in the area. “We saw the wind swing the billboard back and forth before it finally collapsed. People screamed and ran for their lives.”
High-Tension Wires Complicate Rescue Efforts
The falling billboard also brought down high-tension electricity wires, further complicating rescue efforts and endangering more lives.
