Aircraft Crashes at Owerri Airport, Four Rushed to Hospital

An aircraft has crashed at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, Imo State, prompting emergency response and an ongoing investigation by aviation authorities.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed the incident, which involved a Cessna 172 aircraft operated by Skypower Express. According to the Bureau, the aircraft was involved in an accident while operating at the airport on Tuesday.

NSIB disclosed that four persons were injured in the incident and were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention. The extent of their injuries has not yet been officially disclosed.

Emergency services, including airport fire and rescue teams, were swiftly deployed to the scene to secure the area and prevent further danger. Airport operations were briefly disrupted as safety officials carried out initial assessments.

In a statement, the NSIB said it has commenced an investigation into the cause of the crash in line with international aviation standards. The Bureau added that a team of investigators has been deployed to Owerri to gather critical evidence, including flight data, aircraft condition, and eyewitness accounts.

“The NSIB will provide updates as the investigation progresses,” the statement said, urging the public to avoid speculation until the findings are concluded.

Authorities also assured passengers and the general public that safety remains a top priority, while measures are being taken to ensure normal airport operations resume fully.

The Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport has experienced increased aviation activities in recent years, making safety oversight a critical focus for regulators.

Further details are expected as investigations continue.
