Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri Dumps PDP Amid Major Political Shake-Up
In a shocking political twist, Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today, sending ripples across Nigeria’s political landscape.
The governor made the announcement during a briefing at the Government House in Yenagoa, where 18 members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly also confirmed their resignation from the PDP in solidarity with him.
Governor Diri, who has been a loyal member of the PDP since its inception, cited “strategic political reasons” for his decision but stopped short of announcing his next political destination. However, speculations are rife that he may be on his way to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Political observers say Diri’s exit marks a major blow to the PDP in the South-South region, traditionally seen as one of the party’s strongest bases. His defection comes just days after reports of internal rifts within the PDP’s national leadership and growing defections across the country.
If Governor Diri joins the APC, it would further strengthen the ruling party’s influence in the Niger Delta and could reshape political alliances ahead of future elections.
As of now, neither the PDP National Secretariat nor the APC leadership has issued an official statement regarding Diri’s resignation.
