Federal Government, ASUU Reach Agreement on 40% Salary Increase for Lecturers

The Federal Government has reached an agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) that will see a 40 per cent increase in the salaries of lecturers across Nigeria.

The agreement follows a series of negotiations between the government and the university lecturers’ union, aimed at addressing long-standing concerns over welfare, remuneration, and the declining state of public universities in the country.

According to sources familiar with the discussions, the salary adjustment is expected to apply to academic staff in federal universities, with implementation plans to be rolled out in phases. The agreement is seen as a major step toward easing tensions in the university system and preventing further industrial actions that have frequently disrupted academic calendars in recent years.

ASUU

ASUU has consistently argued that poor wages, inadequate funding, and unfavorable working conditions have contributed to brain drain, as many Nigerian lecturers seek better opportunities abroad. The union has also warned that without meaningful improvements, the quality of higher education in Nigeria would continue to decline.

Government officials say the new agreement reflects a renewed commitment to investing in education and stabilizing the university system. They added that the salary increase aligns with broader efforts to reform the education sector and retain skilled academic professionals within the country.

Students, parents, and other stakeholders have welcomed the development, expressing hope that the agreement will lead to fewer strikes and a more predictable academic calendar.

Further details on the implementation timeline and whether the increase will be backdated are expected to be announced in the coming days.
