Former President Goodluck Jonathan Trapped in Guinea-Bissau After Military Announces Takeover
Former Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, is reportedly trapped in Guinea-Bissau following a sudden military takeover announced earlier on Monday.
Jonathan, who is in the country as part of an international team of election observers, was unable to leave alongside other foreign delegates after military authorities sealed key entry and exit points. The observers had been on ground to monitor Guinea-Bissau’s general elections, with official results expected to be announced shortly before the takeover was declared.
According to diplomatic sources, the political tension escalated rapidly as soldiers moved to take control of government institutions, halting all movement around the capital. Flights have been suspended, and foreign delegations have been advised to remain in secured locations until further notice.

Jonathan and other observers are reportedly safe, but their evacuation has been put on hold pending clarity on the country’s security situation and the military’s intentions.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU) are expected to make formal statements as the situation develops. The sudden disruption has raised concerns about political stability and democratic governance in the West African nation, which has experienced several coups and attempted coups in recent years.
More details are expected as the story unfolds.
