Former Super Eagles Coach Adegboye Onigbinde Dies at 88
Former Super Eagles head coach, Festus Adegboye Onigbinde, has died at the age of 88, bringing to an end a remarkable career that spanned several decades in Nigerian football. His death was confirmed by family members on Monday, marking the loss of one of the country’s most respected football tacticians and administrators.
Onigbinde was widely regarded as a pioneer among indigenous Nigerian coaches and played a significant role in shaping the development of football in the country. Over the years, he earned admiration for his discipline, tactical intelligence, and commitment to nurturing young talents.
The late coach first gained national prominence when he managed the Nigeria national football team during the early 1980s. One of the highlights of his career came in 1984 when he guided the team to the final of the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations, where Nigeria finished as runners-up after losing to Cameroon. His leadership during that tournament cemented his reputation as a capable and visionary coach.
Nearly two decades later, Onigbinde returned to the national team setup and led Nigeria to the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Although the Super Eagles did not progress beyond the group stage, his appointment was widely seen as a bold step toward promoting local coaching expertise in Nigerian football.
Beyond the national team, Onigbinde also contributed significantly to grassroots football development and sports administration. He served in various advisory and administrative roles, advocating for better organization and development of the sport across the country.
Outside football, the respected sports figure was also a traditional chief in Modakeke, Osun State, where he remained an influential community leader.
Tributes have begun pouring in from former players, football officials, and fans across Nigeria who remember him for his dedication, humility, and contributions to the growth of Nigerian football.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by his family in the coming days.
