Former Super Eagles midfielder Henry Nwosu dies at 62
Former Nigerian international and Henry Nwosu has died at the age of 62, throwing Nigeria’s football community into mourning.
Nwosu reportedly passed away in the early hours of Saturday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital after battling illness for several days. The news of his death was confirmed by his former teammate, Segun Odegbami, who shared the announcement on his social media platforms.
According to Odegbami, the former midfielder had been receiving intensive medical care at the hospital before he died at about 4:00 a.m. He described the development as painful, noting that Nwosu was fondly called the “Youngest Millionaire” during his playing days.
Born in Imo State, Nwosu was one of the most talented midfielders of his generation and played a key role in Nigeria’s football history. He was the youngest member of Nigeria’s squad that won the 1980 African Cup of Nations, helping the then Green Eagles secure the country’s first continental title on home soil.
During his international career, he made numerous appearances for the Nigeria national football team, earning admiration for his creativity, vision, and technical ability in midfield. After retiring from active football, Nwosu remained involved in the sport as a coach and mentor, contributing to the development of younger players in Nigeria.
His passing comes just days after the death of former Super Eagles coach Adegboye Onigbinde, marking another major loss for Nigerian football.
Tributes have begun pouring in from fans, former teammates, and football stakeholders who described Nwosu as a gifted player and a legend of the Nigerian game.
