Fuel Price Rises in Abuja
Residents of Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja, are facing a fresh wave of economic pressure as the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol, has risen to N1,330 per litre at several filling stations across the city.
The latest price increase, observed on Tuesday, has sparked concerns among motorists, transport operators, and business owners who rely heavily on fuel for daily activities. Many filling stations across Abuja adjusted their pumps to the new price, marking one of the highest retail fuel prices recorded in the Federal Capital Territory in recent months.
Motorists expressed frustration over the development, noting that the continuous rise in fuel prices is worsening the already high cost of living. Some commuters reported that transport fares have started increasing immediately, as commercial drivers attempt to offset the higher cost of petrol.
Commercial driver Musa Abdullahi, who operates along the Nyanya–Wuse route, said the price hike would inevitably affect passengers. According to him, drivers have no choice but to adjust fares to survive.
“This price is too high for us. If fuel is N1,330, we cannot continue to charge the same transport fare. Everything will increase,” he said.
The development also raises concerns among small business owners who depend on petrol-powered generators due to irregular electricity supply. Many say the rising cost of fuel could lead to higher prices of goods and services across the city.
Economic analysts warn that the fuel price surge could further drive inflation, affecting food prices, transportation, and other essential services nationwide.
As of the time of reporting, there has been no official statement from the Nigerian National Company Limited (NNPCL) regarding the sudden increase in pump prices in Abuja. However, industry observers say fluctuations in supply, foreign exchange pressures, and deregulation policies continue to influence petrol pricing across the country.
Residents are now calling on the federal government to provide clarity and implement measures that will help cushion the economic impact on citizens.
