Manchester United Sack Head Coach Ruben Amorim
Manchester United have sacked 40-year-old head coach Ruben Amorim after 14 months in charge, the club confirmed on Monday, 5 January 2026. The Portuguese coach’s turbulent tenure ends amid inconsistent results and rising tension with the club hierarchy.
Amorim, appointed in November 2024 as the successor to Erik ten Hag, departs with United currently sixth in the Premier League, following a 1–1 draw with Leeds United that preceded the decision.
The club’s official statement said the leadership “reluctantly” decided a change was necessary to give the team “the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.”
Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher has been named interim head coach and will lead the team for upcoming matches as United begin the search for a permanent replacement.
Amorim led United to the UEFA Europa League final, but they lost to Tottenham Hotspur.
Last season ended in a 15th-place Premier League finish the club’s worst in decades.
His 14-month spell included poor results and mixed performances, contributing to dissatisfaction among fans and club leadership.
Reports suggest United’s decision will be expensive, with Amorim’s contract and severance expected to cost the club tens of millions in wages and compensation
More details and updates are expected as United continue their managerial search ahead of critical league fixtures.
