Minister Calls for Transformation of Polytechnic Education

The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, has called for a comprehensive transformation of Nigeria’s polytechnic education system, placing innovation, good governance, and sustainability at the heart of national development efforts.

Dr. Alausa made the call on Wednesday at a high-level retreat organised by the Conference of Heads of Polytechnics, Colleges of Education, and related institutions in Abuja. The gathering brought together education leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss the future of polytechnic training in the country.

Speaking on the theme “Transforming Polytechnic Education in Nigeria: Innovation, Good Governance and Sustainability for National Development,” the minister stressed that polytechnics must evolve beyond traditional classroom instruction to become centres of practical problem solving, entrepreneurship, and economic resilience.

“Polytechnics are not mere institutions; they are the crucibles where innovation meets practicality, where skills forge economic resilience, and where sustainable development becomes a lived reality for our nation,” Dr. Alausa said, underlining the government’s focus on revitalising technical and vocational education and training (TVET).

He noted that current reforms aim to ensure polytechnic graduates are industry-ready and capable of driving national growth, calling on leaders to prioritise entrepreneurship, research, and collaborations with the private sector.

The minister’s remarks highlight a broader push by the Federal Ministry of Education to align Nigeria’s educational output with the needs of a modern economy, including recent calls for digital transformation and stronger educational governance frameworks.
