NAFDAC Raises Alarm Over Fake BETACLOX Antibiotic Circulating in Nigeria

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert over the discovery of a suspected substandard and falsified (SF) pharmaceutical product identified within Nigeria’s drug supply chain.

According to a statement released by the agency, the counterfeit product, BETACLOX (Ampicillin 250mg and Cloxacillin 250mg), was found to contain fraudulent NAFDAC registration details and is believed to have originated from an unverified and unauthorized source.

NAFDAC warned that the falsified antibiotic poses a serious risk to public health, as substandard or fake medications can lead to treatment failure, drug resistance, and potentially fatal health complications. The agency emphasized that genuine antibiotics must only be sourced from verified pharmacies and authorized distributors.

Consumers, healthcare providers, and pharmacists have been urged to exercise extreme caution and immediately report any suspicious BETACLOX products or adverse reactions to the nearest NAFDAC office or through the agency’s official reporting channels.

NAFDAC reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the health of Nigerians, pledging to intensify surveillance, investigate the source of the falsified drug, and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
