Nigerian Air Force Rescues 76 Kidnapped Victims in Katsina, One Child Dies in Operation

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has successfully rescued 76 kidnapped victims, mostly women and children, from the captivity of armed bandits in Pauwa Hill, Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State. The operation, however, was marred by tragedy as one child reportedly died during the rescue mission.

According to military authorities, the rescue was part of a sustained air campaign against terror groups and bandit leaders operating in the North-West region. The Nigerian Air Force deployed precision airstrikes after credible intelligence revealed the location of the kidnappers who had been terrorizing rural communities in Katsina.

Details of the Operation

Eyewitnesses and security sources confirmed that NAF fighter jets targeted the bandits’ hideouts, forcing the criminals to flee and leaving behind their hostages. Troops on ground, supported by local vigilantes, were able to free the captives and transport them to a safe zone.

The rescued victims included men, women, and several children who had been held under harsh conditions for weeks. Medical teams have since been deployed to provide urgent care to the freed hostages, many of whom were reported to be weak and traumatized.

Unfortunately, one young child was caught in the chaos of the operation and could not survive. The Nigerian Air Force expressed deep regret over the loss but stressed that the mission prevented a much larger tragedy.

Manhunt for Notorious Kidnap Leader

Security sources revealed that the operation was targeted at a notorious bandit kingpin who has been on the wanted list for orchestrating mass kidnappings in Katsina and neighboring states. While the identity of the leader has not been officially disclosed, intelligence reports suggest he narrowly escaped the strikes.

Authorities say the manhunt is ongoing, with reinforcements deployed to block all escape routes along the Katsina–Zamfara axis.

Government Reaction

The Federal Government praised the Nigerian Air Force and ground troops for their bravery and commitment in rescuing the victims. In a statement, officials reassured Nigerians that the fight against terrorism and banditry remains a top national priority.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda of Katsina State also commended the military for the successful operation, while calling for stronger collaboration between security agencies and local communities in tackling insecurity.

Growing Security Challenges in Katsina

Katsina State, the home state of former President Muhammadu Buhari, has been one of the epicenters of banditry and mass abductions in Nigeria. In recent years, school children, travelers, and farmers have been frequent targets of kidnappers seeking ransom.

Security analysts say the latest rescue mission highlights both the progress and challenges of Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts. While dozens of lives were saved, the tragic loss of a child underscores the devastating impact of banditry on innocent citizens.

Conclusion

The Nigerian Air Force’s operation in Katsina is being hailed as a major breakthrough in the fight against armed banditry. With 76 hostages rescued, the mission brings hope to many families across the region. However, the death of a child during the mission serves as a reminder of the urgency to end the reign of terror in northern Nigeria once and for all.
