NSCDC to Deploy 11,000 Agro-Rangers to Protect Farmers Ahead of 2026 Farming Season

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has announced plans to deploy no fewer than 11,000 Agro-Rangers operatives across the country to strengthen security for farmers ahead of the 2026 farming season.

The decision follows a wave of deadly attacks on farmers recorded in several parts of Nigeria throughout 2025, which raised serious concerns about the safety of agricultural communities and the nation’s food security.

According to the NSCDC, the large-scale deployment is part of renewed efforts to protect farmlands, prevent clashes between farmers and herders, and ensure that farmers can cultivate their lands without fear of violence or disruption.

Agro-Rangers, a specialized unit of the NSCDC, were established to provide security in rural farming communities, safeguard agricultural investments, and protect critical agro-assets across the country.

Officials said the operatives will be strategically stationed in vulnerable farming areas, particularly in regions where attacks on farmers and destruction of crops have been frequently reported. The corps noted that the move is aimed at restoring confidence among farmers and encouraging them to fully participate in the upcoming farming season.

Security analysts have repeatedly warned that persistent attacks on farmers could worsen food shortages and drive up food prices if urgent protective measures are not taken.

The NSCDC emphasized that the Agro-Rangers will also collaborate with local communities, traditional leaders, and other security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering and rapid response to threats in rural areas.

The corps reassured Nigerians that the deployment forms part of a broader national strategy to enhance rural security and support agricultural productivity, which remains a critical pillar of the country’s economy.

With the 2026 farming season approaching, authorities expressed optimism that the presence of Agro-Rangers across farming belts will help reduce attacks and create a safer environment for farmers to operate.
