Senate Begins Review of Electoral Act Amendment Bill

The Senate on Tuesday commenced consideration of the Electoral Act 2022 (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill 2026, marking a fresh legislative effort to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral framework ahead of future elections.

The review began during plenary with lawmakers receiving key documents submitted by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, Senator Simon Lalong. The documents are expected to guide deliberations on proposed reforms and adjustments to the current electoral law.

Following the presentation, the Senate resolved to move into a closed-door session to allow members examine the materials in detail and engage in more extensive consultations on the contents of the bill.

The Electoral Act 2022 has been a major reference point for the conduct of elections in Nigeria, introducing notable provisions such as improved transparency measures and new guidelines for political party primaries. However, stakeholders have continued to call for amendments to address emerging challenges and strengthen the credibility of the electoral process.

The Senate’s latest move signals a renewed commitment to electoral reforms, with the bill expected to undergo rigorous debate and possible public hearings before final passage.

Lawmakers have indicated that the outcome of the review could shape Nigeria’s democratic process, particularly in areas relating to election administration, voting procedures, and dispute resolution mechanisms.

Further legislative action is anticipated in the coming weeks as the Senate continues its consideration of the proposed repeal and re-enactment bill.
