Sowore Arrested at Federal High Court, Abuja Amid Heavy Security Presence
Human rights activist, journalist, and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has been arrested by armed security operatives at the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Thursday morning, sparking tension and outrage among observers and supporters present at the scene.
According to eyewitnesses, Sowore, who arrived at the court to show solidarity with another activist facing trial, was accosted by a team of plain-clothed and uniformed policemen immediately after the court session ended. He was reportedly dragged into a waiting police vehicle despite resistance from his supporters and journalists attempting to record the incident.
Sowore, the publisher of Sahara Reporters and convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, has a long history of clashes with Nigerian authorities over his criticism of government policies and alleged human rights abuses. His latest arrest has once again drawn attention to the state of free speech and civic engagement in Nigeria.
Activists have condemned the arrest as “a direct attack on democracy,” calling for his immediate and unconditional release. The Take It Back Movement (TIB) and several other civil society organizations have already begun mobilizing for nationwide protests in response to what they described as “an unprovoked assault on justice and civil liberty.”
As of press time, the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) have not issued any official statement explaining the reason behind the arrest or where Sowore is currently being held.
This development comes amid renewed debates about government intolerance toward dissent and the shrinking space for activism in Nigeria’s democracy.
