Tinubu Sends Shettima to Kano Over Singer Market Fire Disaster
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead a high-powered Federal Government delegation to Kano State to express sympathy and solidarity with victims of the devastating fire incident at Singer Market.
The market, one of the busiest commercial hubs in Kano, was recently engulfed by a massive fire outbreak that destroyed numerous shops and goods worth millions of naira, leaving traders counting heavy losses. The incident has drawn nationwide attention and renewed concerns over market safety, fire prevention infrastructure, and emergency response systems in major commercial centres across the country.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Presidency said President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the disaster and assured affected traders and residents that the Federal Government stands with them during the difficult period. The President also commended the efforts of firefighters, security agencies, and volunteers who worked tirelessly to contain the blaze and prevent further destruction.
Vice President Shettima is expected to meet with the Kano State Government, traditional leaders, market associations, and affected traders to assess the situation on the ground. The delegation will also explore immediate relief measures and possible federal intervention to support victims and help restore commercial activities in the market.
According to the Presidency, the visit underscores the administration’s commitment to responsive governance and compassionate leadership, especially in times of emergencies and disasters affecting citizens’ livelihoods. The Federal Government is also expected to review fire safety policies and strengthen disaster response mechanisms to prevent future occurrences.
Singer Market plays a crucial role in Kano’s economy, serving as a major trading centre for textiles, garments, and general merchandise, attracting traders and buyers from across northern Nigeria and neighbouring countries.
The Kano State Government has already pledged support for affected traders and called on private organisations and well-meaning Nigerians to assist victims as they rebuild their businesses.
