CAF Postpones 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the postponement of the 2026 edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which will be hosted in Morocco.
According to CAF, the tournament will now take place from July 25 to August 16, 2026, instead of the earlier scheduled dates. The decision was made following consultations with stakeholders in African football, including national federations, broadcasters, and partners.
CAF explained that the adjustment in the tournament schedule is aimed at ensuring better organization, improved preparation time for participating teams, and alignment with the global football calendar. The governing body noted that the new dates would allow players and teams to compete at the highest level without clashes with other major international competitions.
The Women’s Africa Cup of Nations remains the premier women’s football competition in Africa, bringing together the continent’s top national teams to compete for the championship title. The tournament also serves as a major platform for showcasing the growth and development of women’s football across Africa.
Morocco, which will host the competition, has continued to strengthen its reputation as a destination for major football tournaments. The North African nation previously hosted recent continental competitions and has invested heavily in stadium infrastructure and football development programs.
CAF officials said the postponement would not affect the qualification process, as participating teams will continue preparations based on the new tournament timeline. National teams across Africa are expected to intensify their preparations in the coming months as they aim to secure a place in the competition.
Women’s football in Africa has experienced rapid growth in recent years, with increased investment, higher visibility, and improved performances from African teams on the global stage. CAF believes the rescheduled tournament will further elevate the standard of the women’s game on the continent.
Football fans across Africa are now looking forward to the 2026 edition of WAFCON in Morocco, which is expected to deliver exciting matches and highlight the rising talent in African women’s football.
