Federal Government Reaffirms Commitment to Clear Outstanding Public Service Entitlements

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to clearing long-outstanding entitlements owed to public servants affected by the 2004–2007 public service reforms, assuring that nearly all verified beneficiaries have now been paid, with full settlement expected before the end of 2026.

This assurance was given as part of ongoing efforts by the government to address legacy liabilities arising from the restructuring and reform of the federal public service carried out over two decades ago. The reforms, which included right-sizing measures, restructuring of ministries and agencies, and changes to employment terms, left thousands of public servants awaiting payment of severance benefits, pensions, and other entitlements.

According to the government, significant progress has been made in recent years following the verification and validation of claims submitted by affected workers. Officials noted that payments have been made in phases to beneficiaries whose records were successfully authenticated, helping to reduce the backlog that had persisted for years due to documentation gaps, funding constraints, and administrative challenges.

The government stated that only a small number of cases remain unresolved, largely due to incomplete records, discrepancies in submitted claims, or ongoing reconciliation processes. Efforts are currently underway to conclude verification for these outstanding cases to ensure that no eligible beneficiary is left out.

Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and fairness, the Federal Government emphasized that the settlement process is being handled in line with approved guidelines and available fiscal space. Authorities also assured that funds would continue to be released incrementally to meet the obligations, with the aim of achieving full clearance of all verified entitlements before the end of 2026.

Affected public servants and stakeholders have welcomed the renewed assurance, describing it as a positive step toward bringing closure to a long-standing issue that has caused hardship for many retirees and disengaged workers. The government urged remaining beneficiaries to cooperate with relevant agencies by providing any outstanding documentation needed to complete the verification process.

The reaffirmation signals the government’s broader commitment to honoring obligations to public servants and strengthening trust in public sector reforms, while ensuring that legacy issues from past restructuring exercises are responsibly resolved.
