THE LIFE AND TIMES OF LATE HRM EZE (SIR) JOHN ONWUBIKO UKOMADU (KSC)

BIRTH:

Late Hrm Eze Sir John Onwubiko
Ukomadu was born on the 12th
March, 1927 to the family of late
Ugorji Ukomadu, the first Son of
Late Ukomadu Nwokocha of
Umuosoevula in Umuomai Akpaa
Mba-Ato. Married to late Grace
Ukomadu (nee mumenne) from the
family of ljah Akandu of Umuezem
in Akpaa Mba-Ato.

EDUCATION:

In 1937 by mid-year, he started
schooling in the St. Clements (NDP)
School Akpaa Amato, an Anglican
controlled School.

He was in the School up to 1941, when it was closed in 1942, he moved over to S.D.A School Aba. it was in this School that he obtained his First School Leaving
Certificate in 1946.

In 1947, he entered Aggrey Memorial College Arochukwu then in Aba there was no Secondary School as at that time. In 1951, He sat for the Senior Cambridge School Certificate Examination and came out in flying colours.

CAREER:

After his graduation, on July 14th, 1952, he entered the Nigerian Railway Traffic Institute where he passed out with excellent results.

In January 1953, he commenced the practical training of his course in Traffic and Commercial Operating at Lagos, Ebutte Metta from where he was transferred to Enugu.

He held several positions before he was retired. He was the Chairman  All Ngwa Students Union Nation Wide in 1951/52 after his early Education at Aggrey Memorial College Arochukwu.

He was the founder and first Chairman of Akuma-Imo Fraternal Congress from 1954-1960.

He was the founder and Chairman of NNE-BU-HE Association, Akpaa Mba-Ato from 1982-1998.

He was a member of the board of Governors in All Saints Secondary
School, Ehere there in Aba from 1972 – 1975.

He was Chairman Board of Governors,
Alaoma Secondary Technical School, Akpaa Mba-Ato from 1982-1999.

He was camp director in charge of 6000 refugees during the Biafran-Nigerian Civil War in 1967-1970 during that period the least number of deaths recorded throughout Biafra land (East).

He was Divisional Councellor representing Akuma-Imo Clan in the Ngwa Divisional Council from 1972-1973.
In 1992.

He was honoured with a Chieftaincy title by the Late (Dr) A. U. Emeonye as IHIE RUO ULO of Akuma-Imo Autonomous Community and he served as the Palace Secretary till the death of the king.
In 1995, he was honoured with another Chieftancy title by Eze (Sir)I. W. Uduko as the OME IHE ZIRI EZI 1 of Nteghauzor Amiri Autonomous Community. In April 1995,

He was invested and admitted into Sacred Order Of The Knight Hood of Saint
Christopher in the Anglican Communion by the Late Rt. Rev. (Professor) A.O.
Iwuagwu in the Diocese of Aba.

On 19th December, 2000 he was honoured and instituted as the first King/Eze/Traditional ruler of Akpaa Mba-Ato Autonomous Community.

In 2002, he was appointed a board member for the Nigerian School of
Languages Obikabia, Ovom Amaasa in Obingwa LGA Abia State.

He was a member of the Ukwa-Ngwa Traditional Rulers Council in the year 2000 till date.

He was also appointed as a member in the State Council of Traditional Rulers in charge of maintenance of public order twice in (2007-2015), he was also a member of the Obingwa Council of traditional rulers (2003-2007).

Till his death, he was the Eze/Traditional ruler of Akpaa Mba-Ato Autonomous Community in Obingwa L.G.A. Abia State.

NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS OF HRM DURING HIS REIGN

  • Attraction of a water project from the NDDC.
  • Attraction of free medical missions from various organisations.
  • Inauguration of the first ever Akpaa Youth Council.
  • Construction of the Community Health Centre.
  • Renovation of the dilapidated primary and secondary school buildings.
  • Continuous upholding of our age old traditions such as igba ekpe, ichu
    afo etc.
  • Resolution of land disputes within kindreds and villages.
  • Ensuring the evacuation of Fulani herdsmen from our farmlands without
    bloodshed.
  • Comprehensive amendment of the constitution of the community, which
    was concluded just a few months before his demise.
