Peter Obi Drags Adeyanju To Court, Demands ₦1.5 Billion For Defamatory Post
The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has filed a ₦1.5 billion lawsuit against political activist Deji Adeyanju over an alleged defamatory publication made against him on social media.
According to reports, the case was filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where Obi, through his legal representatives, accused Adeyanju of making false, malicious, and injurious statements that were deliberately crafted to damage his reputation and mislead the public. The former Anambra State governor stated that the post circulated by Adeyanju portrayed him in a negative light, causing “serious emotional distress, reputational harm, and public ridicule.”
In his statement of claim, Obi demanded ₦1.5 billion as general damages for the harm done to his public image. He is also seeking a public retraction and written apology to be published in several national newspapers and major online media platforms. The suit further requests a court injunction restraining Adeyanju from making any future defamatory remarks about him.
Peter Obi’s legal team emphasized that the Labour Party flag bearer has maintained a clean image throughout his political career and that Adeyanju’s post was a deliberate attempt to malign his integrity and mislead the public.
As of press time, Deji Adeyanju is yet to issue an official response to the lawsuit. However, the case has already generated massive public debate, with Nigerians taking to social media to express mixed reactions. While some argue that Obi has every right to defend his reputation, others view the lawsuit as an attempt to silence criticism.
