BREAKING: Labour Party gets new National Chairperson
Ex-Minister Nenadi Usman Emerges LP Caretaker Chairperson; Abure-Led NWC Objects.
This happened after a stake holders meeting of the Labour Party was called upon by the incumbent Governor of Abia State who won and is ruling under the umbrella of the party. This meeting consisted of all major stake holders of the party, the presidential aspirant, his excellency Dr. Peter Obi and his deputy, including other elected candidates of various order. Also included in the meeting are the labour unions, Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) , Trade Union Congress (TUC) and others.
Recalled that the tenure of the party chairman Mr. Abure has expired, hence the need to constitute a caretaker committee as the party constitution stipulated.
The committee duty is to rescue the party from its current crisis and conduct a national convention where the new party leaders will be elected from ward to the national level.
Daniel Gambo, a member of the national transition committee formed by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), confirmed this development to Kpomkwem News correspondence on Wednesday. He stated that Mrs. Usman was unanimously elected to lead the 29-member national caretaker committee.
The meeting took place at the Banquet Hall of the Abia Government House in Umuahia, the state capital. Convened by Governor Otti.
The stakeholders met at the Banquet Hall of Abia State Government House, where Senator Nenadi Usman was unanimously nominated to chair the newly constituted LP caretaker committee and the immediate past minority senate leader, Senator Darlington Nwokocha from Abia Central senatorial district will serve as Secretary of the 29 member caretaker committee which will last a duration of 90 days.
He also noted that the 29-member committee includes representatives from the Senate, House of Representatives, the six geopolitical zones, the NLC, and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
However, the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the party has rejected the outcome of the stakeholders’ meeting, calling it illegal and unconstitutional.

In a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the NWC declared, “As clearly stated in our previous statement, the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, and all others who gathered in Umuahia have no authority under the party’s constitution, the Electoral Act, or even the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to convene any meeting of the party.”
The statement continued, “Moreover, the expanded stakeholders’ meeting is not an organ recognised by the party’s constitution. The premise on which Governor Alex Otti called the meeting is not only flawed but also mischievous. Government business is conducted through official communication and correspondences, not verbally.
Who is Senator Nenadi Usman
Senator Nenadi Esther Usman was the a minister for Finance during president Obasanjo’s regime, she hails from Kaduna State and represented Kaduna south senatorial district in 2011 through 2015. She was one of the prominent actors in Obedient movement.
Amongst the dignitaries that engrace the occasion are the party 2023 presidential contestant, Peter Obi and his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, Victor Umeh, Lagos state Governorship aspirant in the immediate past election amongst the host other party wigs that massively attended the meeting hosted by Governor Alex Otti.
