LONDON, UK — Daniel Dubois delivered a devastating performance to defeat Fabio Wardley by second-round stoppage on Saturday, October 17, retaining his World Boxing Organization (WBO) heavyweight title in their highly anticipated rematch at London’s O2 Arena.
Dubois dropped Wardley with a powerful right hand just 17 seconds into the opening round before unleashing a relentless assault that left his British rival struggling to cope with the champion’s power.
Wardley survived the first-round onslaught, but Dubois resumed his attack in the second round, forcing Wardley’s corner to throw in the towel at 2 minutes, 21 seconds. Referee Steve Gray subsequently stopped the contest.
The victory reinforced Dubois’ dominance in the rivalry, following his 11th-round stoppage of Wardley in their first encounter in May.
‘It Was My Time and My Era’ — Dubois
Reacting after the fight, Dubois declared that his performance was a statement of intent, insisting that he had approached the rematch determined to secure a decisive victory.
“Fabio is a great warrior, coming in for a second time, but it was my time and my era,” the champion said.
He added: “I had my intentions, bad intentions, from the beginning.”
Dubois also explained that his team had been determined to demonstrate their seriousness from the opening bell after the challenges they faced in their first meeting.
“Our back was against the wall the first time. This time, we just had to go out there and show that we mean business, and that’s what we did tonight,” he said.
Wardley Vows to Return After Heavyweight Defeat
Despite the defeat, Wardley acknowledged the difficulty of the sport and expressed his determination to bounce back.
“It’s never fun to lose – but it is what it is, it’s the name of the game,” Wardley said.
He added that he would draw lessons from the defeat and seek to return stronger.
“Daniel’s a testament to coming up short and coming again. I’ll be looking to do the exact same thing,” he said.
Wardley’s comments reflected the resilience he had shown in their first encounter, when he twice knocked Dubois down before eventually losing in the 11th round.
What Next for Dubois?
The victory strengthens Dubois’ position in the heavyweight division and raises the prospect of further championship contests.
IBF heavyweight champion Filip Hrgovic was present at the O2 Arena and challenged Dubois to a potential unification fight.
Dubois welcomed the possibility of reclaiming the IBF title he previously held, saying he wanted to regain the belt and establish himself at the top of the division.
With the heavyweight landscape continuing to evolve, Dubois’ emphatic victory over Wardley has increased anticipation surrounding his next title defence and potential unification bouts.
