Police Arrest 12 Over Murder Of Arise TV Anchor, Security Guard In Abuja

In a major breakthrough, the Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest of 12 suspects in connection with the gruesome murder of an Arise Television anchor and her security guard in Abuja. The shocking incident, which sent waves of grief across the media industry and the nation at large, occurred last week when the journalist was reportedly attacked at her residence by armed assailants.

According to police spokesperson ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, the arrests followed a coordinated intelligence led operation by a joint team of detectives, tactical squads, and forensic experts. He revealed that the suspects are currently undergoing interrogation, with early findings linking them to a notorious criminal gang that has been terrorizing parts of the Federal Capital Territory.

“We have in custody 12 individuals strongly connected to the unfortunate murder of the Arise TV anchor and her private guard. The investigation is progressing, and we are committed to ensuring justice is served swiftly,” Adejobi stated.

The late journalist, celebrated for her professionalism, fearless reporting, and dedication to truth, was allegedly attacked in the early hours while attempting to escape through a second-floor window. Her security guard was also killed in the violent episode, sparking widespread outrage and renewed calls for improved safety measures for media practitioners in Nigeria.

Civil society organizations, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), and human rights advocates have condemned the incident, demanding speedy prosecution of the culprits and stronger protections for journalists.

“This is not just an attack on a media professional, but on press freedom itself. We expect nothing less than justice and accountability,” the NUJ said in a statement.

The arrests mark a significant step in unraveling the case, but questions remain about the broader issue of insecurity in the capital city. Analysts warn that the incident underscores the urgent need for government to intensify community policing, intelligence gathering, and surveillance to curb rising violent crimes in Abuja and across Nigeria.

As investigations continue, the family of the slain anchor, colleagues at Arise TV, and the wider public await justice for a life and career cut short by senseless violence.
