FIFA and UEFA are reportedly considering a major overhaul to the qualification process for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, with plans to introduce a new Champions League-style format for European qualifiers.

According to reports, the proposed system would replace the traditional group-stage qualification model with a league-based structure similar to UEFA’s revamped Champions League competition. The idea is aimed at creating more competitive fixtures, increasing fan excitement, and generating higher commercial value during the qualification stages.

Under the proposed format, European national teams could be placed in larger leagues or divisions where they would face multiple opponents in a rotating schedule rather than the usual home-and-away group matches. The new structure may also include knockout-style playoffs and ranking systems designed to keep more countries involved until the later stages of qualification.

UEFA and FIFA are said to be exploring the changes ahead of the historic 2030 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, with opening celebration matches expected in South America to mark the tournament’s centenary.

Supporters of the new system believe it would reduce “dead rubber” matches and create blockbuster clashes between top football nations more frequently during qualification campaigns. However, critics argue that smaller nations could face tougher paths to qualification if elite teams dominate the league-style setup.

The 2030 FIFA World Cup will also feature an expanded 48-team tournament format, increasing the number of qualification spots available across different confederations.

Neither FIFA nor UEFA has officially confirmed the final structure yet, but discussions are reportedly ongoing as football authorities continue reshaping international competitions for the future.
