JUST IN: UBA Welcomes Emmanuel N. Nnorom as New Group Chairman After Elumelu’s Exit

United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA) has welcomed Emmanuel N. Nnorom as its new Group Chairman, succeeding Tony O. Elumelu, who retired from the bank’s Board on August 21, 2026, after completing the maximum 12-year tenure prescribed for non-executive directors of banks under Central Bank of Nigeria corporate governance guidelines.

Nnorom, who officially assumed office on August 21, brings more than four decades of experience in banking, finance, audit and corporate leadership to the position. UBA describes him as a seasoned business leader and chartered accountant with extensive institutional knowledge of the Group.

His relationship with UBA spans several years and includes senior executive positions such as Managing Director/CEO of UBA Africa, Group Chief Operating Officer and Group Chief Financial Officer. He also previously served as Executive Director overseeing Finance, Risk and the Group Executive Office before becoming a Non-Executive Director of the bank.

Beyond UBA, Nnorom has held major leadership positions in Nigeria’s corporate sector. He served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Transnational Corporation Plc (Transcorp) from 2014 to 2017 and later as Group Chief Executive Officer of Heirs Holdings.

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), an Honorary Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) and an alumnus of Templeton College, Oxford.

UBA’s board had earlier announced Nnorom as Elumelu’s successor in July, with the appointment scheduled to take effect upon Elumelu’s retirement on August 21.
