Kwankwaso Welcomes APC Defectors to NDC, Kwankwasiyya Movement in Kano

According to a report on Sunday, August 2, 2026, the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has received a fresh batch of defectors from the All Progressives Congress (APC) into the NDC and the Kwankwasiyya Movement as political realignments gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Among the new entrants was Danlami Zakari Unguwar Gertai, popularly known as Garkuwan Gari, from Gari Local Government Area of Kano State, who arrived with a large number of supporters during the reception held on Sunday.

A statement shared by the Kwankwasiyya Movement on its official social media platforms said the event took place at Kwankwaso’s residence on Miller Road in Kano. It noted that the new members declared their full support for the NDC and reaffirmed their commitment to the principles and objectives of the Kwankwasiyya Movement.

According to the statement, the defectors also pledged to work with the party in advancing what they described as a shared vision of building a better and more prosperous Nigeria.

The defections come shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) published the credentials and personal particulars of NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi and his running mate, Kwankwaso, as part of the electoral process for the 2027 general elections.

Obi and Kwankwaso contested the 2023 presidential election under different political parties before later joining the APC. They subsequently left the ruling party for the NDC, citing unresolved internal disagreements and prolonged legal disputes within the APC.

The latest defections are seen as a boost to the NDC’s grassroots expansion efforts, particularly in Kano State, where the Kwankwasiyya Movement continues to wield significant political influence.
