Abia, South-east States Plan Regional Rail Network to Boost Connectivity
Abia State Governor Alex Otti has revealed that South-east states and some parts of the South-south are discussing plans to establish a regional rail network aimed at improving connectivity and economic integration.
Speaking during his monthly media chat in Umuahia on Thursday, Otti said the proposed rail system would link Port Harcourt, Aba, Enugu, Imo and Akwa Ibom.
He explained that the Abia government initially hired a Chinese company to design a light rail project that would connect major parts of the state, but the plan was expanded after considering a wider regional approach.
“We had engaged a Chinese company which produced a design that would link many parts of the state.
“But, on further consideration, we found that linking parts of the state without taking neighbouring states into account may not be the best approach,” he said.
Otti said the standalone project was suspended to align with the broader regional rail initiative involving neighbouring states.
“The South-east states and some parts of the South-south are now in discussions on how we can connect ourselves through a regional rail network,” he added.
The governor noted that the existing Port Harcourt–Maiduguri railway, which passes through Aba, could be integrated into the proposed network to improve economic viability.
On reports that South-east governors had endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term, Otti said individuals, including governors, had the right to express personal opinions but could not represent others.
“I am not sure I heard that, but if Governor Hope Uzodimma said so, it is his right as a governor and as an individual.
“He cannot speak for everybody. I think it is still early in the day to discuss that,” he said.
He added that the final decision on the 2027 elections would be determined by voters through the ballot.
“He (Tinubu) has the right to seek a second term, just as others who wish to contest have the right to do so.
“At the end of the day, it is the ballot box that will determine what happens, including in this state,” he said.
The governor also announced that the state government had acquired 20 additional electric buses to improve public transportation and was planning new housing estates in Umuahia and Aba.
He reaffirmed his administration’s focus on education, security, infrastructure, science, technology, innovation, arts and culture across Abia State.
