Ronaldo Retires From International Football After 23 Years With Portugal
Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a remarkable 23-year career with the national team.
The 41-year-old forward made the announcement on Thursday, November 5, 2026, through a social media video, confirming that he would no longer represent Portugal.
Ronaldo, who made his international debut in August 2003, said it was time to hand over the iconic No. 7 shirt to the next generation.
“To the Portuguese people, the day has come for me to hand back the No. 7 shirt of our national team,” he said.
“Today the time has come to pass it on to the future. It was not an easy decision, because some decisions are not made with the mind alone – they are also made with the heart.”
During his illustrious international career, Ronaldo made a record 234 appearances for Portugal, scoring 146 goals to become the highest-scoring male player in international football history.
He also captained Portugal to its first European Championship title at Euro 2016 and helped the country secure the UEFA Nations League trophies in 2019 and 2025.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner further made history as the first player to score at six editions of the FIFA World Cup, having featured in the tournaments from 2006 to 2026.
His retirement announcement comes weeks after reports of a disagreement with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus over his playing time, which led to his departure from the national team’s camp. He subsequently apologised to his teammates and supporters.
Portugal’s Football Federation has paid tribute to the departing captain, describing him as an exceptional athlete, inspiring leader and symbol of the national team’s identity.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo’s retirement is limited to international football, as he is expected to continue his club career with Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr.
His departure marks the end of one of the most successful international careers in football history.
