Peter Obi Demands ₦5 Billion Damages from Kenneth Okonkwo Over Alleged Defamatory Remarks

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has taken legal action against Nollywood actor and former ally, Kenneth Okonkwo, over statements he described as false and damaging to his reputation.

Through his legal representatives, Obi issued a formal demand seeking ₦5 billion in damages, accusing Okonkwo of making defamatory allegations during a recent television interview.

The controversy stems from comments made by Okonkwo on Channels Television, where he alleged that Obi and certain political figures requested a ₦10 million payment from aspirants seeking House of Representatives tickets. The claims have since generated widespread reactions within political circles.

In response, Obi, through his lawyer, maintained that the allegations were completely false and malicious, insisting that he had never demanded or received any illegal payment from any political aspirant.

The legal notice reportedly demands that Okonkwo withdraw the statements, issue a public apology on national television and his social media platforms, and pay ₦5 billion as compensation for the alleged damage caused to Obi’s reputation. He was also warned against making similar claims in the future.

Meanwhile, Obunike Ohaegbu, whose alleged account was referenced during the controversy, has denied accusing Peter Obi of personally demanding any money from him, stating that his earlier comments were misunderstood.

Reacting to the legal threat, Kenneth Okonkwo reportedly dismissed the ₦5 billion demand and stated that he would give an official response after thoroughly reviewing the legal documents. He further maintained that he was prepared to defend his position if the matter proceeds to court.

The development marks a significant escalation in the public disagreement between the two former political associates. As of the time of filing this report, the matter remains a legal dispute and has not been determined by any court of law.
