Peter Obi Makes Surprise 2027 Declaration, Vows to Scrap First Lady’s Office

Obi 2027 Bid Plans

Former Anambra State Governor and New Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has suggested that the 2027 presidential election could be his last attempt at the presidency, while urging Nigerians to ensure the shortcomings he believes affected the 2023 election are not repeated.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Obi reiterated his claim that he won the 2023 presidential election, despite the courts upholding President Bola Tinubu’s victory. He said, “We must ensure what happened in 2023 does not happen again,” stressing the need for votes to be properly counted, protected and transmitted.

Obi said he was open to working with opposition leaders such as Atiku Abubakar and Rabiu Kwankwaso but added, “My biggest group I need to work with is the youths of Nigeria,” describing young people as central to Nigeria’s future.

On whether he would contest beyond 2027, Obi acknowledged that younger Nigerians should eventually take over, saying, “I believe that the younger ones should be allowed.”

The former governor also pledged to reduce the cost of governance by reviewing presidential aircraft, eliminating unnecessary government offices and redirecting resources to education and healthcare.

On the Office of the First Lady, Obi said his administration would not maintain a separate government bureaucracy around the president’s wife, stating, “The person seeking vote today is Peter Obi, not Mr and Mrs Obi.”

He also promised a tough anti-corruption campaign, saying, “I will fight corruption brutally and I will show it. I will live it.”

Obi argued that leaders must lead by example, adding, “You ask the people to fast, you fast with them. You can’t ask them to fast when you’re feasting.” He maintained that his 2027 campaign would build on the movement that emerged in 2023, with a renewed focus on ensuring every vote counts.
