Supreme Court Restores Mark’s ADC Leadership, Voids Status Quo Order

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has restored the leadership of Senator David Mark within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), setting aside an earlier status quo order that had created uncertainty over the party’s internal structure.

In a decisive ruling delivered on Wednesday, the apex court held that the lower court erred in granting a status quo directive that effectively disrupted the recognized leadership of the party. The justices ruled that such an order was improperly issued and lacked sufficient legal basis, thereby nullifying it.

The judgment reaffirms Mark’s position and authority within the ADC, bringing clarity to a leadership dispute that had sparked tensions among party stakeholders in recent months. Legal analysts say the ruling underscores the Supreme Court’s stance on the limits of interim orders in political matters, particularly when they risk altering established leadership arrangements without due process.

Reacting to the verdict, members of the Mark-led faction welcomed the decision, describing it as a victory for internal democracy and the rule of law. They noted that the ruling would help stabilize the party ahead of future political activities and elections.

However, opposing voices within the party have called for calm, urging members to respect the court’s decision while exploring lawful avenues to address lingering grievances.

The ADC, a growing opposition platform in Nigeria’s political landscape, has in recent years faced internal disagreements over leadership and direction. Observers believe the Supreme Court’s intervention may help reset the party’s structure and refocus its agenda.

The ruling is expected to have wider implications for intra-party disputes across Nigeria, reinforcing judicial caution in issuing interim orders that could influence political balance before substantive matters are fully determined.
