Tinubu To Address UN General Assembly September 23
ABUJA — President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to address world leaders at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.
Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, confirmed Tinubu’s attendance, saying:
“The president was able to give us his word. Now, he will come to UNGA this September.”
Tinubu is expected to highlight Nigeria’s reforms and regional security, particularly efforts to strengthen border policing across West Africa. Ibrahim said:
“So, border policing will be fine. These are the kind of things that the UN is established for.”
The General Debate runs from September 22 to 28 under the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
US Records Dispute
Tinubu’s visit comes amid an ongoing US court dispute over the disclosure of FBI and DEA records concerning him. The FBI submitted records to a federal judge under seal on August 28, but the documents have not been publicly released.
The FBI said the records were compiled during investigations involving multiple people suspected of drug-trafficking offences.
“The responsive records herein were compiled in furtherance of the FBI’s investigation of multiple individuals for drug trafficking crimes,” the agency stated.
However, the submission of the records does not establish that Tinubu committed a drug offence, and no US court has found him guilty of criminal wrongdoing in the case.
The Presidency has described the matter as a civil FOIA records-disclosure dispute, stating:
“For clarity, the matter is a civil records-disclosure dispute under the United States Freedom of Information Act. It is not a criminal case against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, nor has the court found him guilty of any criminal wrongdoing.”
Claims by a US lobbying firm concerning alleged FBI and DEA reviews, and a possible Trump-Tinubu meeting, have not been officially confirmed by the US government.
