YouTube Is Changing How Views Are Counted—Here’s What Creators Need to Know

YouTube to Introduce Unified View Counting Across All Video Formats by Samuel Isaiah

YouTube is updating how it counts video views across the platform, bringing all video formats in line with the view-counting system already used for Shorts.

From August 24, 2026, a view will be recorded as soon as a video starts playing, from its very first frame. The new standard will apply globally to Shorts and all other video formats.

YouTube said the change is aimed at eliminating confusion caused by different view-counting systems and giving creators a clearer picture of their actual audience exposure.

What the change means for YouTube Analytics

The existing view metric will remain available in YouTube Analytics > Advanced Mode under the name “Engaged views.” This will allow creators to see how many viewers continued watching after the video began playing.

No change to monetisation

YouTube said the update will not affect creator earnings or eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP).

Creator earnings will continue to be calculated using “Engaged Shorts views” and “Engaged Watch Hours,” both available in YouTube Analytics.

There will also be no change to YPP eligibility requirements. YouTube will now refer to the requirements as “qualified Shorts views” and “qualified watch hours,” replacing the previous terms “valid public Shorts views” and “valid public watch hours.”

Starting August 24, creators will see the new view metric wherever view counts appear on YouTube. As a result, many creators are likely to see their total view counts increase more quickly.

YouTube said the unified system will provide creators with a clearer understanding of their overall reach and make it easier to demonstrate their audience size and value to brands and YouTube to Introduce Unified View Counting Across All Video Formats sponsors.
