LIVE UPDATES EDITORIAL: Anambra Decides 2025

The heartbeat of the Southeast is racing again Anambra is voting. From the bustling streets of Awka to the riverine communities of Ogbaru, today’s governorship election is not just another democratic ritual; it is a referendum on performance, trust, and the power of the people’s voice.

Professor Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) stands before the people seeking a renewed mandate. His first term, marked by economic restructuring and heavy infrastructure push, now meets the judgment of a population tired of promises but still hopeful for progress. Yet, the opposition strong, vocal, and hungry for power believes Anambra deserves a new script.

Voting began as early as 8:30 a.m. in several polling units, though delays in material arrival and low morning turnout painted familiar scenes of Nigerian elections. The BVAS hiccups returned like an old wound, frustrating some voters in Onitsha and Awka South. Still, the spirit of democracy held strong from the 96-year-old elder who couldn’t be accredited to the 110-year-old voter who proudly cast his ballot, the will of the people echoed louder than the flaws of the system.

Security presence is tight but calm, with INEC and security operatives visibly stationed across the 21 local government areas. Corps members, however, voiced grievances over unpaid allowances a small but telling reminder that democracy often rests on the shoulders of the underappreciated.

As the sun settles over the Anambra skyline, one truth remains: this election is more than a contest of candidates it is a test of faith in Nigeria’s electoral process. Whether Soludo secures a second term or the tides shift toward a new face, the verdict will reflect not just political loyalty, but the collective hunger for leadership that listens and delivers.

For now, Anambra waits. The ballot boxes are speaking and by nightfall, we will know which voice truly carries the people’s heartbeat.
