“Charge Me to Court, You’ll Get the Evidence There” — VeryDarkMan Replies Police Over Kidnap Claims
Social commentator Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has challenged the Nigeria Police Force to take him to court over his allegations that some security personnel aid kidnapping and banditry in Nigeria.
VDM’s response followed an invitation issued by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) asking him to provide evidence backing the allegations he made during a panel session at the 2026 Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
According to reports, VDM alleged that some police officers manning checkpoints along major highways identify wealthy travellers and allegedly pass information about their identities and movements to kidnappers, thereby facilitating abductions for ransom.
The Police Force rejected the allegation as serious, unsubstantiated and damaging to the institution, while calling on VDM to provide any credible evidence in his possession.
The Force said officers deployed to checkpoints and other locations are mandated to prevent crime, detect criminal activities and protect citizens. It added that individual officers found to have compromised their duties would face disciplinary action and prosecution where wrongdoing is established.
Responding to the invitation in a video posted on his Instagram page, VDM said he was ready to face the authorities but would not hand over his evidence during police questioning.
He challenged the Police to charge him to court, insisting that his lawyers were ready and that he would present his evidence through the judicial process.
“I’m not going to be giving the police my evidence. Why would I do that? I would be charged to court, and I would turn down the evidence in court,”
VDM said, according to Channels Television and Punch reports.
He further maintained his allegation that security agencies contribute to the persistence of insecurity in the country, including kidnapping, banditry and terrorism.
“Let’s meet in court. The evidence will be tendered there,” he said.
However, the allegations against the security agencies remain allegations and have not been established as facts. The Police have disputed VDM’s claims and requested evidence to enable investigation.
The development comes amid continuing concerns over kidnapping and other forms of insecurity across Nigeria, with authorities facing increasing pressure to strengthen security and hold individuals found responsible for criminal activities accountable.
