Sowore advocates ₦500,000 minimum wage

Sowore advocates #500,000mjnimum wage. Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has called for a ₦500,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers, insisting that citizens deserve salaries that reflect the country’s worsening economic realities and rising cost of living.

Sowore argued that the current wages earned by many Nigerian workers can no longer sustain basic needs such as food, transportation, housing, healthcare, and education amid persistent inflation and economic hardship. According to him, workers across different sectors, especially security personnel and civil servants, are underpaid despite the risks and responsibilities attached to their jobs.

Speaking during recent public engagements and media appearances, the activist questioned the large income gap between political office holders and ordinary workers. He maintained that while some government officials earn millions monthly, many workers survive on salaries below ₦100,000, which he described as unfair and unsustainable in today’s economy.

Sowore stressed that a ₦500,000 minimum wage would better match Nigeria’s inflation rate and help improve the welfare of workers struggling with the high prices of fuel, food, rent, and other essentials. He also noted that better salaries could improve productivity and reduce corruption in public institutions.

The former African Action Congress presidential candidate has repeatedly advocated higher wages over the years. In previous campaigns, he proposed improved minimum wage structures, arguing that Nigerian workers deserve compensation that guarantees a decent standard of living.

His latest comments have sparked discussions among Nigerians on social media, with many citizens supporting calls for better worker welfare, while others questioned whether such a wage structure would be sustainable for the government and private sector employers.
