US, Nigeria Near Strategic Security Agreement to Tackle Terrorism — Congressman Riley Moore
United States Congressman Riley Moore has disclosed that the United States and Nigeria are close to finalising a strategic security agreement aimed at combating terrorism and sectarian violence across Nigeria.
Moore made the statement while speaking on growing security cooperation between both countries, noting that discussions have reached an advanced stage. According to him, the proposed agreement is designed to strengthen intelligence sharing, military training, and counterterrorism operations, particularly in regions affected by insurgency and religiously motivated violence.
Nigeria has faced persistent security challenges in recent years, including Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West, and recurring sectarian clashes in parts of the country. Moore acknowledged these concerns, describing Nigeria as a critical partner in ensuring regional stability in West Africa.
“The United States recognises Nigeria’s strategic importance, not just to Africa but to global security,” Moore said. “This agreement is about giving Nigerian security forces the support, tools, and cooperation needed to confront terrorism and protect civilian lives.”
He added that the partnership would also focus on addressing the root causes of violence, including community tensions and ideological extremism, while upholding human rights and democratic values.
Nigerian and US officials have not yet released full details of the agreement, but analysts believe it could include expanded defence assistance, joint counterterrorism initiatives, and enhanced border security cooperation.
If concluded, the deal would mark a significant step in US–Nigeria relations and reinforce both nations’ commitment to curbing insecurity, restoring peace, and promoting long-term stability in Nigeria and the wider West African region.
