UK, Canada Visa Fees Compared: What Nigerians Will Pay in 2026

Nigerians planning to travel, study, or relocate abroad in 2026 are closely watching visa costs as application fees for both the United Kingdom and Canada continue to shape migration decisions.

Recent updates show that visa fees for both destinations remain significant, with slight adjustments reflecting inflation, policy changes, and administrative costs.

For the United Kingdom, the standard visitor visa (valid for six months) is expected to cost around £115–£120. Students applying for study visas will pay approximately £490, while skilled worker visa applicants may pay between £610 and £1,420 depending on the duration and job category. In addition to these fees, applicants must also budget for the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), which can exceed £1,000 per year for long-term stays.

In comparison, Canada’s visa fees appear relatively moderate at first glance. A standard visitor visa costs about CAD $100, while a study permit is around CAD $150. Work permits also fall within a similar range, typically about CAD $155. However, additional costs such as biometrics (CAD $85) and other processing charges can increase the total expense.

Despite Canada’s lower base fees, experts note that the overall cost difference may narrow when factoring in other requirements such as proof of funds, medical examinations, and travel expenses. The UK, on the other hand, remains one of the most expensive destinations due to its healthcare surcharge and higher application fees.

For many Nigerians, the choice between the UK and Canada goes beyond visa costs. Factors such as job opportunities, immigration policies, permanent residency pathways, and quality of life continue to influence decisions.

Migration consultants advise applicants to plan thoroughly, ensure accurate documentation, and consider the full financial commitment before applying.

As global migration demand rises in 2026, both countries remain top destinations for Nigerians seeking better education, career prospects, and long-term stability.
