Onyeka Onwenu Buried in Lagos
The late veteran singer, journalist, and cultural icon Onyeka Onwenu, affectionately known as the “Elegant Stallion,” has been laid to rest today in a poignant ceremony in Lagos. Onyeka Onwenu passed away on July 30, 2024, at the age of 72, she succumbed to injuries from a fall during an event to honour Emzor Pharmaceuticals’ Managing Director, Dr. Stella Okoli.
She was taken to Reddington Hospital in Ikeja, where she later died.
Onyeka Onwenu buried in an emotional ceremony, has left a significant impact, as she was not only a renowned musician but also a respected broadcaster, actor, politician, and activist.
The funeral service for Onyeka Onwenu was held at The Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, Lagos. Following the service, Onyeka Onwenu was buried in a private ceremony at a mausoleum in Ikoyi. The event saw a notable turnout, including figures such as former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti.
She was survived by her two sons: Abraham and Tijani Ogunlende,.
The sons have expressed gratitude to the governor of Abia State, Alex Otti and the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi for their support.
They said: “It is with heavy hearts that I and my brother wish to announce the passing of our mother, the much-loved Onyeka Onwenu. She passed away last night, Tuesday, July 30 2024, in Lagos Nigeria.
“She was rushed to the hospital after an amazing last performance, where doctors made every effort to save her life… sadly she passed.
“Onyeka Onwenu was a national treasure, an icon and legend, who inspired multiple generations of Nigerians and people around the world with her music, acting, philanthropy and humanitarian efforts.
She is greatly loved and missed.
