A Nigerian professor has been sentenced to 70 months imprisonment in the United States over a $1.4 million fraud scheme, according to U.S. authorities.

The professor, whose activities reportedly involved wire fraud and financial deception, was convicted after investigations revealed that large sums of money were illegally obtained through fraudulent transactions and false representations. Prosecutors said the scheme caused significant financial losses to victims and violated multiple federal laws.

During the court proceedings, U.S. officials explained that the defendant used professional credibility and international connections to facilitate the fraud operation over a period of time. Evidence presented in court reportedly showed the movement of funds through different accounts linked to the scheme.

The sentencing, which amounts to nearly six years in prison, also includes possible restitution payments and supervised release after completion of the jail term. Authorities stated that the case reflects America’s continued crackdown on international financial crimes and cyber-related fraud.

The development has generated reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the growing number of fraud-related cases involving citizens abroad. Others also stressed the need for stronger ethical standards and accountability within professional and academic communities.

U.S. law enforcement agencies reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing financial crime cases regardless of nationality, warning that individuals involved in fraudulent activities would continue to face severe legal consequences.
