Nigeria Qualifies for the Round of 16, after 3 wins out of 3
In their final Group C encounter at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, the Nigeria Super Eagles secured a strong 3–1 victory over the Uganda Cranes, topping the group and booking their place in the Round of 16 with a perfect record.
After already sealing qualification before kick-off, Nigeria approached the match with confidence, making several changes while still maintaining strength in key areas. Uganda needing a win to keep their hopes alive of progressing to the knockout stage battled hard but ultimately succumbed to superior firepower.
Paul Onuachu broke the deadlock in the 28th minute, capitalising on a well-worked attack to put Nigeria ahead before the break. The Super Eagles controlled possession and looked the more threatening side throughout the first 45 minutes.
Nigeria extended their advantage early in the second period through Raphael Onyedika, who scored twice in quick succession (62′ and 67′), turning the game decisively in Nigeria’s favour. The goals came after Uganda were reduced to 10 men following a red card for their goalkeeper, a pivotal moment that swung momentum fully to Nigeria.
Despite the setback, Uganda continued to fight and were rewarded with a consolation goal by Rogers Mato in the 75th minute. His clever finish gave the Cranes something to cheer about, but it was not enough to change the outcome of the match.
