NLC, TUC Suspend Planned FCT Protest

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have announced the suspension of their planned protest in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), directing all affected workers to return to their duties immediately.

The protest, which was expected to draw significant participation from workers under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), was reportedly organized to press home demands related to workers’ welfare and unresolved labour concerns.

In a joint statement issued on Monday, the leadership of the two labour unions confirmed that the decision to halt the protest followed ongoing engagements and interventions aimed at resolving the issues at stake.

According to the unions, workers have now been instructed to resume work across all departments and agencies within the FCTA with immediate effect, pending further discussions with relevant authorities.

“The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress have suspended their planned protest in the Federal Capital Territory and instructed workers under the Federal Capital Territory Administration to return to their duties with immediate effect,” the statement read.

The suspension is seen as a move to allow dialogue and negotiation processes to continue without disrupting essential public services in the nation’s capital.

Labour leaders emphasized that while the protest has been put on hold, the unions remain committed to ensuring that workers’ demands are addressed fully, warning that further action could be taken if agreements are not honoured.

The development brings temporary relief to residents of Abuja, who had anticipated possible disruptions in government activities and public services during the planned demonstration.

Negotiations between the labour unions and the FCTA are expected to continue in the coming days as both parties work toward a lasting resolution.
