Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), has announced plans to adopt a consensus method in electing its national leadership at the forthcoming party convention.

Party insiders revealed that the move is aimed at fostering unity and avoiding internal conflicts that often arise from competitive elections. The consensus arrangement allows key stakeholders within the party to agree on candidates before the convention, thereby ensuring a smoother and less contentious process.

Sources within the APC leadership say consultations are already ongoing among influential figures, including governors, party elders, and members of the National Executive Committee. The strategy, according to party officials, is to maintain stability within the party ahead of future political engagements and governance responsibilities.

A senior party chieftain, who spoke anonymously, noted that the consensus approach has been used successfully in the past and reflects the party’s commitment to cohesion. However, the decision has also sparked mixed reactions among party members, with some arguing that it may limit internal democracy by sidelining open contests.

Political analysts believe the APC’s choice signals a desire to present a united front amid Nigeria’s evolving political landscape. They argue that while consensus can reduce friction, it must be managed transparently to retain the confidence of party members and the public.

The date for the convention is expected to be announced soon, with preparations already underway at both national and state levels. Observers say the outcome will play a significant role in shaping the party’s direction and internal power dynamics in the coming years.
