Anambra youths protest killing of 26-year-old, demand probe
Tension gripped parts of Anambra State on Thursday as scores of youths staged a protest over the killing of a 26-year-old resident, calling on authorities to launch an immediate and transparent investigation.
The demonstrators, who gathered in large numbers, carried placards and chanted solidarity songs, insisting that justice must be served. Witnesses said the protest began peacefully but drew widespread attention as it moved through major roads, causing temporary disruption to traffic and commercial activities.
Community leaders and youth representatives accused security operatives of failing to protect lives and demanded clarity surrounding the circumstances of the young man’s death. Many protesters insisted that those responsible must be identified and prosecuted without delay.
“We cannot continue to lose our young people under unclear conditions,” one protester said. “We are asking for a full investigation and accountability.”
Local authorities acknowledged the incident and appealed for calm, assuring residents that steps were being taken to determine what happened. A spokesperson for the state government said relevant agencies had been directed to commence a probe and that anyone found culpable would face the law.
Security presence was heightened in key areas to prevent any breakdown of law and order, while officials engaged community stakeholders to de-escalate tensions.
Civil society groups have also weighed in, urging an independent inquiry and emphasizing the need for justice to restore public confidence.
As of the time of filing this report, no official arrests had been confirmed, but authorities reiterated their commitment to ensuring that the matter is thoroughly investigated.
