US Congress Intervenes in Nnamdi Kanu Case

Fresh Twist as US Lawmakers Back Nnamdi Kanu

According to a report published by The Punch on June 2, 2026, a resolution has been introduced in the United States House of Representatives calling on the Nigerian government to ensure that all legal proceedings involving the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, comply with both constitutional provisions and international human rights standards.

The resolution, designated H.Res. 1321, was presented by U.S. Representative John James on May 22, 2026.

The proposal raises concerns over the humanitarian implications of Kanu’s 2021 arrest in Nairobi, Kenya, and his subsequent transfer to Nigeria. It also references a previous determination by the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which concluded that his detention breached international legal norms.

In addition, the resolution expresses concern over the effects of prolonged detention, particularly regarding access to adequate medical care, and urges the U.S. Secretary of State to engage Nigerian authorities on the matter.

Part of the resolution states that the Nigerian government should ensure that all judicial processes involving Kanu are conducted in line with the country’s constitutional responsibilities and international human rights obligations.

The development comes amid ongoing legal proceedings involving the IPOB leader. On November 20, 2025, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja found Kanu guilty on seven terrorism-related charges and sentenced him to life imprisonment, despite calls by prosecutors for the death penalty.

Kanu’s legal representatives have since challenged the judgment through an appeal, seeking to overturn both the conviction and sentence.

Although the U.S. resolution is non-binding and remains at the introductory stage without co-sponsors, it reflects growing international attention on issues surrounding judicial transparency and the rule of law in Nigeria.
