Nigeria’s House of Representatives Set to Begin Debate on Constitutional Amendments Tomorrow

The House of Representatives will begin formal debate on proposed amendments to the 1999 Constitution tomorrow, December 3, marking a major step in the ongoing constitutional review process aimed at strengthening governance, accountability, and national cohesion.

According to legislative sources, lawmakers will use the plenary sessions to examine various proposals submitted by citizens, civil society groups, state assemblies, and advocacy organisations. The debates are expected to cover key areas such as devolution of powers, restructuring of revenue allocation, local government autonomy, electoral reforms, judicial strengthening, and gender-related amendments.

Following one week of deliberations and committee reviews, the House is scheduled to begin voting on the individual amendments on December 9, 2025. Each amendment will require a two-thirds majority to pass before being forwarded to the Senate and subsequently to state assemblies for concurrence, as required by the constitutional amendment process.

Lawmakers say the review is crucial to addressing structural challenges in Nigeria’s governance system and improving service delivery across all levels of government. Citizens and advocacy groups are closely watching the development, hoping the process will lead to meaningful reforms.

The constitutional amendment vote on December 9 is expected to be one of the most consequential legislative moments of the 10th National Assembly.
