NFF to appoint Schafer as Super Eagles Coach

NFF to appoint Schafer as Super Eagles Coach.

Former Cameroon boss Winfried Schafer has said he is in touch with the FA of Nigeria to become coach for the Super Eagles  upcoming World Cup.

Nigeria sacked Shaibu Amodu following the Africa Cup of Nations and several names have been mooted as his successor, including former Liverpool star John Barnes and ex-Germany striker Jurgen Klinsmann.

However ex-Karlsruhe boss who led the German side to Bundesliga glory in 1987 and also took Cameroon to the 2002 World Cup, said he is also on the lengthy shortlist for the role.

“I am obviously among a shortlist of three and actually it is about some details to solve,” he reportedly told reporters

“But I am only accepting this kind of job if everything is getting in order.

“You only travel to a World Cup with certain goals to achieve. There will be no big compromise.”

Other suggested names for the Nigeria post include former Sweden chief Lars Lagerback, Egypt coach Hassan Shehata, Serbian duo Ratomir Djukovic and Dragoslav Stepanovic and Qatar manager Bruno Metsu.

However, despite 60-year-old intending coach admission, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has been quick to play down which names are the actual ones on the shortlist.

“We have been reading about all these names in the media but they remain the product of the media,” said Taiwo Ogunjobi, NFF’s technical committee chairman.

“The coaches we shortlisted are the names we are working on and other coaches are figments of the media.

“We can’t be talking about such a sensitive thing in the media as it will be highly disrespectful to the coaches involved.

“I guess our decision to stay out of gossip columns is responsible for the media speculations but we will get the right man.”

The NFF is expected to name the national side’s replacement on 28th February
