The Abia State Government has reacted to reports surrounding the arrest of a personnel of the Nigerian Army, Staff Sergeant Amoke Simon, just days after he was publicly received and promised medical assistance by Governor Alex Otti.

In an official statement released on Thursday, the state government said it had been made aware of the development and expressed concern over what it described as an unexpected turn of events. According to the statement, Staff Sergeant Simon had only recently been in the spotlight following a meeting with Governor Otti, where his health condition and personal circumstances were brought to public attention.

During that meeting, Governor Otti had reportedly assured the soldier of the state’s support, particularly in addressing his medical needs. The gesture was widely seen as part of the administration’s broader commitment to humanitarian interventions and support for individuals who have served the country in various capacities. The promise of medical assistance had drawn praise from members of the public, many of whom commended the governor for extending a helping hand to a serving member of the armed forces.

However, news of the soldier’s subsequent arrest has raised questions and concerns, especially given the timing and the circumstances surrounding his recent interaction with the state government. While details of the arrest remain limited at this time, the Abia State Government emphasized the importance of transparency and due process in handling such matters.

The statement noted that the government is currently seeking clarification from the appropriate authorities regarding the reasons for the arrest and the conditions under which it was carried out. It stressed that a clear understanding of the situation is necessary to ensure that justice is served and that the rights of the individual involved are respected.

“The attention of the Abia State Government has been drawn to reports of the arrest of Staff Sergeant Amoke Simon. This development is of concern, particularly in light of the recent engagement between the soldier and the state government, during which support was extended to him on humanitarian grounds,” the statement read in part.

The government further reiterated its commitment to the welfare of security personnel, noting that individuals who have dedicated their lives to serving the nation deserve fairness, dignity, and support, especially when faced with personal challenges. It called on relevant authorities to handle the situation with professionalism and sensitivity, ensuring that all actions taken are in line with established legal and institutional frameworks.

Observers say the incident has sparked conversations among residents and across social media platforms, with many Nigerians calling for more information about the circumstances of the arrest. Some have also raised concerns about the broader implications of the situation, particularly in relation to the treatment of military personnel and the coordination between state governments and federal security institutions.

As the situation continues to unfold, the Abia State Government assured the public that it remains engaged and will continue to monitor developments closely. It also pledged to provide updates as more verified information becomes available.

For now, attention remains focused on the response of the Nigerian Army and other relevant authorities, as stakeholders await clarity on the events that led to the arrest of Staff Sergeant Amoke Simon and what it means for his welfare and the support earlier promised by the state.
