Bishop Kukah Advises Goodluck Jonathan Ahead of 2027 Elections

Prominent Catholic cleric and social commentator, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, has urged former President Goodluck Jonathan to tread carefully as the nation gradually approaches the 2027 general elections. His counsel comes amid speculations and growing discussions about Jonathan’s possible role in the evolving political landscape of Nigeria in 2027.

Speaking at a public forum in Abuja, Bishop Kukah noted that Nigeria’s democracy is at a “fragile but decisive crossroads” and warned that leaders of Jonathan’s stature must show restraint, wisdom, and moral clarity as the country prepares for another critical election cycle.

Leadership Beyond Ambition

Kukah reminded Jonathan of his historic concession in 2015, describing it as one of Nigeria’s most important democratic turning points since Democracy. According to the cleric, the former president’s legacy lies not just in his years in office but in the example he set by prioritizing peace over personal ambition.

“Your Excellency, the Nigeria of 2027 needs voices of wisdom, not desperation. What you represent should not be reduced to the struggles for power, but elevated as a moral compass for those who wish to serve,” Kukah reportedly said.

He urged Jonathan to focus on mentoring younger politicians, strengthening democratic institutions, and lending his influence to causes that unite, rather than divide the country.

With 2027 still two years away, Nigeria’s political climate is already heating up. Conversations about zoning, succession, and the balance of power between North and South dominate public discourse. Analysts argue that Jonathan, as a figure with both national and international recognition, remains a symbolic force in the conversation, whether or not he chooses to contest.

Kukah, however, cautioned against allowing political actors to “use Jonathan’s name as a bargaining chip,” warning that such a move could erode the respect he commands globally.

Public Reactions

The bishop’s advice has sparked mixed reactions. Supporters of Jonathan welcomed the intervention, insisting that the former president has always acted in the best interest of Nigeria. Others, however, believe Kukah’s warning reflects a growing unease within the political class about recycling past leaders instead of grooming fresh faces.

On social media, many Nigerians applauded Kukah for speaking “truth to power” while urging Jonathan to carefully weigh his next moves in the interest of national unity.

Editorial Perspective

At Kpomkwem News, we believe Bishop Kukah’s counsel is both timely and necessary. Nigeria’s democracy must not be anchored on the ambitions of a few, but on the collective will of the people and the emergence of competent, visionary leadership. Former President Jonathan remains a respected statesman, and how he chooses to position himself ahead of 2027 will either solidify or diminish that legacy.

Nigeria stands at a threshold where history must guide ambition. Leaders like Jonathan should be voices of reason, not competitors in a never-ending struggle for power.
